The Federal Government has commenced the distribution of relief materials to individuals affected by flooding in the Niger Delta region this year, with the launch event taking place in Akure, the capital of Ondo State.
The relief items include trucks of rice, motorcycles, sewing machines, grinding machines, cooking stoves, smokeless stoves, and various food supplies such as spaghetti and beans.
In Ondo State, flooding has impacted several villages, including areas in Akokoland, Ondo town, Akure, and some communities in Ondo South.
Engr. Abubakar Momoh, the Minister of Regional Development, delivered the items to the Ondo State government, emphasizing that the initiative reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to assisting flood victims and providing necessary support.
Momoh noted that while the government’s policies might be challenging, they are essential for creating sustainable solutions.
“The decisions being made are difficult, but they are crucial for addressing the long-standing issues facing our country. If we want Nigeria to flourish, we must implement significant changes that may initially cause hardship,” he stated.
He urged the public to remain hopeful, saying that the positive effects of the government’s decisions would soon become apparent.
President Tinubu instructed Momoh to visit Akure to convey his message of support. He highlighted the recent floods in the Niger Delta, which have displaced many and disrupted livelihoods.
“This symbolic presentation marks the beginning of our efforts to provide palliative support throughout the Niger Delta,” Momoh added, explaining that the distribution will involve local stakeholders, including governors, traditional rulers, and ministry representatives.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by Olaniyi Gbenga, Commissioner for Regional Planning and Urban Development, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the timely assistance and assured that measures are being implemented to prevent future flooding in the state.
