The Federal Government has finally started disbursing the new ₦77,000 monthly allowance to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members.
While the increase is a welcome relief for many, others are expressing disappointment that the amount is still not enough to cover their living expenses.
The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, confirmed that the payments have commenced, but noted that the disbursement is being done in phases.
This has left some corps members still awaiting their allowance.
Corps members in Kwara, Kano, and Yobe states have reported receiving the increased allowance, with priority given to 2024 Batch A Stream 2 members.
However, many are expressing concerns that the ₦77,000 allowance is barely sufficient to cover their living expenses, given the rising cost of living.
“It’s a good start, but ₦77,000 is still not enough,” said one corps member, who preferred to remain anonymous.
“We’re struggling to make ends meet, and this allowance is just not sufficient.”
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has assured that the government is committed to supporting NYSC members and will continue to review their allowances to ensure they are fair and adequate.
As the payments continue to roll out, NYSC members are eagerly awaiting the backlog of delayed payments, which the government has promised to pay
