FCT Minister: No Request Received for Eagle Square Protest

By Taiwo Niyi, KWARA |

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that his office has not received any formal request to use Eagle Square for the #EndBadGovernance protest slated to begin on August 1.

Wike made this known during a town hall meeting with key stakeholders in the FCT.

He stated that the protest organisers had not sent any letter seeking permission for the use of Eagle Square.

The minister urged protesters to use appropriate channels rather than relying solely on social media to communicate their intentions.

Earlier, Wike had stated that the FCT would not be available for the protest, advising the sponsors to reconsider their plans.

The meeting included stakeholders such as FCT Minister (State) Mariya Mahmoud, area council chairmen, traditional rulers, religious leaders, political party representatives, and representatives from women and youth groups.

The aim was to establish a dialogue between the FCT administration and residents to address grievances and explore solutions.

During the town hall meeting, Wike reiterated the importance of following proper procedures to ensure that protests are conducted legally and safely.

He stressed that the government is not against peaceful protests but insists that due process must be followed to prevent any disruptions or security issues.

Wike assured the stakeholders that the FCT administration is committed to addressing the concerns of the residents and working towards sustainable solutions.

He highlighted the need for continuous engagement between the government and the citizens to foster mutual understanding and cooperation.

The minister also called on the leaders present to encourage their communities to follow legal protocols when organising protests or other public gatherings.

He noted that using formal channels to communicate their intentions would facilitate better planning and coordination, ensuring the safety and security of all participants.

In addition, Wike addressed the broader issues of governance and development within the FCT.

He outlined several initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, enhancing security, and promoting economic growth.

He therefore urged the residents to support the government’s efforts and actively participate in the development process.

The town hall meeting ended with a consensus among the stakeholders on the importance of maintaining peace and order in the FCT.

They agreed to work together with the administration to address the challenges facing the territory and to promote a collaborative approach to governance and development.
