Former African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Dumebi Kachikwu, called on Sunday for peaceful resolution and national stability amidst political tensions.
Kachikwu urged protesters and those dissatisfied with the current administration to remain peaceful and focus on the next presidential election as a means to challenge the incumbent.
Kachikwu stressed the importance of constructive opposition, encouraging critics to offer solutions rather than incite violence or seek to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s democratically elected government.
He advised President Tinubu to engage in broad consultations and avoid making decisions in isolation.
In a statement from Abuja, Kachikwu highlighted the need to move beyond blame and violence, stating, “We can’t continue killing ourselves.
“Our streets are flowing with the blood of the innocent. Over 19 people were killed in this sham of a protest, all for what?
“No child of any politician or big man was killed, just the poor, average Nigerian. Only their family members will mourn them quietly, while those profiting from this chaos laugh to the bank.”
Acknowledging the widespread hardship in the country, Kachikwu noted, “We are witnessing unprecedented hardship. The poor can barely afford a meal in two days.
“Most of us can no longer afford the necessities. The population of the poor is increasing by the minute. As leaders, we need to come to a table of equity, justice, and fairness to address the plight of the downtrodden immediately.”
Kachikwu urged Tinubu to demonstrate leadership by collaborating across party lines, saying, “It is not Tinubu’s problem alone, and Tinubu must stop acting like he can do it all by himself.
“He must show leadership and reach out across party lines to get the best and the brightest to a solution roundtable.”
He criticised the opposition for merely opposing without offering solutions, pointing out, “The job of the opposition now is to oppose and propose, but what we are doing is only opposing without providing any solutions to our problems.
“In advanced democracies, the opposition offers their stance and solutions on all issues and debates rigorously, but here all we want to do is criticise Tinubu without proposing concrete solutions. This is not leadership.”
Kachikwu lamented the missed opportunities for meaningful political debates in Nigeria, noting the lack of insistence on credible debates during elections.
