Ethiopia Landslides Death Toll May Reach 500, Says UN

The United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warns that the death toll from recent landslides in southwestern Ethiopia could rise to approximately 500.

So far, 257 lives have been lost, with rescue operations still underway.

Heavy rains triggered two landslides, one on Sunday night and another on Monday morning, affecting the Gofa zone.

The second landslide struck as rescuers were aiding victims of the first.

At least 125 people have been displaced, 12 injured, and over 15,000 are at risk of further landslides, requiring immediate evacuation.

The region is prone to climate-related disasters, with heavy seasonal rains causing flooding, infrastructure damage, and displacement.
