Enugu Private Schools to Pay N300,000 Education Tax, Not N5 Million – Commissioner

By Babalola Odunola

The Enugu State Government has clarified that private schools in the state are required to pay an education tax ranging from ₦100,000 to ₦300,000, not the ₦5 million previously reported in some quarters.

In a statement issued in Enugu on Thursday, the State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ndubueze Mbah, explained the correct tax amounts required for new and existing private schools.

“New and existing private schools in the state are required to either register for provisional approval or renew their licenses,” Prof. Mbah said.

“This involves a fee between ₦100,000 and ₦300,000, depending on the category the school falls into.

The approved schedule of fees was made public earlier in June,” he added.

Prof. Mbah also urged the public to disregard rumors that the administration of Governor Peter Mbah has mandated a payment of ₦1 million to ₦5 million as an educational tax on private schools.

“The ministry is also empowered to streamline and enhance the effective administration, monitoring, and supervision of private schools,” the commissioner noted.

This clarification comes amid concerns over the financial burden such taxes might impose on private educational institutions in the state.
