The Umuaga Town Union (UTU) of Enugu State has elected Chief Sir Martins Obumneme Agu (KSM) as its new President-General, following a highly contested election held at Nzoba Field on January 29, 2025.
The election, supervised by the Enugu State Ministry of Chieftaincy Matters, marks a new chapter for the agrarian community in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Chief Agu, a devout Catholic and a Knight of St. Mulumba (KSM), pledged his commitment to the development of Umuaga, unveiling a robust agenda aimed at transforming the town’s infrastructure, security, and economic prospects.
“My vision is to build a stronger, safer, and more prosperous Umuaga,” Chief Agu declared during his acceptance speech.
“We will construct a multipurpose civic center, strengthen our security architecture, reticulate water across the community, and ensure every household has access to prepaid electricity meters.”
The newly elected President-General also promised to prioritize healthcare improvements, working with government agencies to recruit qualified medical staff, equip the local health facility, and ensure the availability of essential medications.
On agriculture, Chief Agu emphasized his plan to boost the community’s agrarian economy. “Farming is the backbone of Umuaga. I intend to facilitate access to agricultural financing, fertilizers, improved seedlings, and promote mechanized farming to improve productivity and income for our farmers,” he said.
Chief Agu also highlighted youth and women empowerment as a key focus, revealing plans for skills acquisition programs and take-off grants to help reduce unemployment.
Additionally, he vowed to improve rural road networks to ease transportation of goods and services.
A proud alumnus of the St. JohnCross Seminary Old Boys Association – Class of 2000 (SOBA 2000) and holder of a Master’s degree in Psychology from Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Chief Agu’s leadership has been widely praised.
In his congratulatory message, Dr. JohnBosco Chika Chukwuorji, the newly elected President of SOBA 2000, commended Chief Agu’s dedication to community service.
“His emergence as President-General reflects his passion and countless contributions to Umuaga. Chief Agu’s selflessness and leadership will undoubtedly bring growth and progress to the town,” Dr. Chukwuorji stated.
Echoing this sentiment, Engr. Donald Odoh, the Vice President-elect of SOBA 2000, along with prominent alumni members like Hon. Ogbuefi Chuks Eddie Alli and Engr. Jude Ichoku (Ononenyi), pledged their unwavering support.
“We stand behind Chief Agu as he takes on this great responsibility. Umuaga is in capable hands,” Engr. Odoh assured.
Before returning to Nigeria, Chief Agu had a successful career abroad in bulk trading and real estate.
Now fully settled back home, he is focused on using his global experience to drive local development. He is happily married and blessed with three children.
As Umuaga looks forward to this new era of leadership, the community remains optimistic that Chief Agu’s vision will lead to lasting progress and prosperity.
