The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has initiated a thorough investigation into the activities of 11 individuals suspected of oil theft, alongside the vessel MT SAISNIL II, which were apprehended by the Nigerian Navy.

Mr. Dele Oyewole, spokesperson for the EFCC, confirmed the commencement of the investigation in a statement released on Saturday.

According to Oyewole, the suspects and the vessel were handed over to the EFCC’s custody by the Nigerian Navy, specifically by NNS Beecroft stationed in Apapa, Lagos.

The vessel and its crew were intercepted and detained on February 7, 2024, by naval officers.

The suspects are believed to have been involved in illegal oil bunkering and violations of the Automatic Identification System (AIS) regulations at Abo Oilfield, Ogogoro Community, Ondo State.

Oyewole emphasized that the suspects will face charges in court once the EFCC operatives in its Lagos Command conclude their investigations.
