EFCC Laments Corruption’s Damage to Nigeria’s Global Reputation

By Ekpenyong Emmanuel

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has expressed deep concerns over the devastating impact of corruption on Nigeria’s global image.

EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, emphasized that corruption has significantly damaged the country’s reputation, citing high-profile cases involving former governors James Ibori, Joshua Dariye, and the late Diepreye Alamieyeseigha.

Olukoyede noted that these cases, along with others involving individuals like Emmanuel Nwude, Ramon Abbas (Hushpuppi), and Ismaila Mustapha (Mompha), have contributed to Nigeria’s negative perception globally.

He stressed that corruption remains a significant obstacle to Nigerian missions’ ability to project a positive image abroad.

The EFCC chairman highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability in both the public and private sectors to achieve optimal development in the country.

He also emphasized the need for Nigerian diplomats to uphold the ethics of their profession and prioritize national interest.

Olukoyede outlined the EFCC’s efforts to rebuild Nigeria’s global reputation, including enforcement actions, collaborations with international law enforcement agencies, asset recovery, and advisory services for foreign investors.

He urged Nigerian missions to complement the EFCC’s work by providing intelligence on corrupt Nigerians abroad and facilitating partnerships with foreign law enforcement agencies.

Olukoyede stressed the importance of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, and appealed to all Nigerian diplomats to prioritize national interest in eradicating corruption and restoring Nigeria’s standing in the global community.
