Ebonyi To Unveil State-owned Airline

By Chukwuma Okoro

Ebonyi State’s government has unveiled plans to launch its own airline, marking a significant step forward in the ongoing development of the Chuba Okadigbo International Airport in Abakaliki. The announcement came during a recent inspection tour of the airport by the Commissioner for Aviation and Transport Technology, Dr. Ngozi Obichukwu.

Dr. Ngozi Obichukwu disclosed that once the Chuba Okadigbo International Airport achieves full operational status, the state government aims to venture into the aviation sector with its airline. The airport, currently undergoing runway asphalting, is anticipated to be fully operational by August.

The commissioner expressed confidence in the collaborative efforts of Governor Francis Nwifuru, former Governor David Umahi, and the engineering team, highlighting the progress made on the airport’s infrastructure. She emphasized the airport’s dual role in accommodating both passenger and cargo flights, citing its strategic location as a potential economic hub for the South East region.

“If you do not blow your trumpet, another person will blow it wrongly. We are here as a team to tell you what our dear governor is doing on the runway of the Wilberforce Chuba Okadigbo Airport. Many have been asking questions, are we good to go? Are we able to deliver the road by May as we promised? With your eyes and your senses, you people have seen what we have done and the extent we have gone.”

Dr. Obichukwu outlined the airport’s potential to boost Ebonyi State’s export capabilities, particularly in agricultural produce like rice, garri, and salt. She emphasized the state’s readiness to package and export these products efficiently once the airport becomes operational.

The commissioner also highlighted the airport’s significance as a central transportation hub, expected to attract travelers not only from within the South East region but also from neighboring states like Abia, Enugu, Anambra, and even parts of Cross River. This influx of activity is projected to contribute significantly to the economic growth and development of the South East, benefiting various sectors and stakeholders.

“We are at the centre of attraction as far as the South East is concerned. Those of them that are coming from Abia, Enugu, Anambra, and even part of Cross River will be landing here. Those of them that are travelling from outside will be landing here. It will not only be a beehive of activities, but an economic hub of the South East because many people will benefit from here.”, Obichukwu said.
