DSS Probes Involvement of Seven Polish Nationals in #EndBadGovernance Protests

The Department of State Services (DSS) has initiated an investigation into the arrest of seven Polish nationals in Kano State.

These individuals were detained in connection with the violent protests against economic hardship and hunger that have erupted across Nigeria.

DSS Spokesperson, Peter Afunanya revealed this during a meeting with the diplomatic corps led by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, on Wednesday.

Afunanya explained that the Polish nationals were arrested due to their involvement in the protests and their display of foreign flags in the North-West region.

He noted that the arrests were not a targeted action against Polish citizens specifically.

The meeting, which also included Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, a representative of the National Security Adviser, the Inspector General of Police, and the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, was convened in response to the nationwide protests that began on August 1, 2024.

Minister Tuggar used the occasion to highlight the Federal Government’s efforts to improve socioeconomic conditions.

He mentioned significant strides in reducing debt servicing from 90% to 68%, and outlined initiatives aimed at ensuring food security, job creation, and attracting investment.

Tuggar condemned the negative portrayals on social media, which he said are destabilising the country and undermining the government’s efforts.

He therefore urged for a more balanced and accurate representation of the government’s initiatives and the current situation in Nigeria.

The protests, which have been widespread and intense, reflect the public’s frustration with the current economic situation.

The government’s measures to address these issues have been met with both support and criticism from various sectors.

The outcome of the DSS investigation will be closely watched, both domestically and internationally.
