The Oyo State Government has called on the Federal Government to appropriately honor the late Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of Nigeria’s national flag.

In a statement from Prince Dotun Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, the acting governor, Barr. Bayo Lawal stated that, “The commemoration of the death of an iconic figure like Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, who designed the Nigerian flag 64 years ago at the age of 23, should be treated as a national festival.”

He added, “The fact that Pa Akinkunmi hailed from this part of the country does not diminish his status as a national hero.”

The Acting Governor’s remarks were made during the funeral service for Pa Akinkunmi, held at Liberty Stadium in Ibadan.

Lawal further stated that Pa Akinkunmi exemplifies a national icon, and it is the Federal Government’s responsibility to bestow upon him the respect and honor he deserves, both in life and in death.

The State Government had previously allocated funds for the burial and presented a symbolic national flag to the deceased’s family.
