Don’t Advertise Products Without Approval’ – NAFDAC tells Companies

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has warned Companies against advertising products without been approved by the Agency.

The Director, Southwest Zone, NAFDAC, Mrs. Roseline Ajayi said this during the Stakeholders Forum held in Ibadan on Thursday, April 7, 2022.

According to her, every product regulated by the Agency requires Advert Permit before they can be advertised. Hence, any company that advertise a product without due permit from the Agency risk been sanctioned.

In her words, “drugs are not to be advertised. Well there are some categories of drugs especially the ones that are not categorized as prescribtion drugs may be advertised including Herbal.

“The reason why you need advert permit is that we want to be sure that what you are telling the people is exactly what the drugs stands for.

“You can’t present a drug for registration that is meant for a particular illness and in the advertisement you are claiming multiple illnesses that the product can cure, that is why not just herbal drugs or other drugs, every products that NAFDAC regulates requires advert permit.

Earlier, while speaking on some issues of concern to the Agency, the Zonal Director enjoined Stakeholders to take advantage of the information available on the Agencies website rather than seeking information from third parties to avoid falling victims of fraudsters.

She said, “all information needed are available on the Agency’s website”. Adding that offices are also opened to provide all needed support.

The event which had in attendance stakeholders in the pharmacitical, Herbal and Food sector featured interactive section where participants were obliged the opportunity to speak on critical issues of concern.

Some of the dignitaries present at the event includes; the Ogun State Coordinator, NAFDAC, Pharm. Daniel Danjuma; Deputy Director, NAFDAC, South West zone, Pharm. Omoyeni Babatunji; Oyo State Chairman, Pharmacists Society of Nigeria (PSN) Pharm. Oguntoye Adegboyega; Chairman, Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria, Pharm. Gbadamosi Abiodun and the Chairman, Oyo State Herbal Products Manufacturers and Marketers Association of Nigeria, Mr. Opeyemi Fowowe.

Others are: the President, Association of Islamic Healers of Nigeria, Alh. Ismail Jamil; Senior Manager, Regulatory Affairs, ZARTECH Nigeria, Mr. Ajayi Bayor as well as representatives from various Organisation.

Speaking is an interview with NATIONAL TELESCOPE, some of the dignitaries applauded NAFDAC for hosting the Forum.

The PSN Chairman, Oguntoye Adegboyega said, “This is a good development because this is a fora that comprises all the stakeholders.

“I believe if this kind of gathering is sustained we are going to have good collaborative outcome that will help the health of Nigerian.”

Also, the Chairman, Oyo State Herbal Products Manufacturers and Marketers Association of Nigeria, Mr. Opeyemi Fowowe, said “This programme is very important, we had this last February 2019.

“Today we have the opportunity to have interaction with NAFDAC, to let them know some of our difficulties.

“With this, we believe it will provide us the opportunity to see how we can collaborate better in order to achieve our goals.” He added.
