The Delta State government has announced that workers in the State Public Service will close work at 12 noon on Friday, July 12, 2024.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori approved this measure to allow public servants to participate fully in the State Local Government elections scheduled for Saturday, July 13, 2024.
This announcement was made in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu.
The statement noted the importance of civic responsibility, urging public servants to engage in the election process.
It also noted that workers in essential services, such as health, security, and media, should adopt a flexible schedule to ensure they can still perform their duties while participating in the elections.
In a related development, the Delta State Police Command has issued a warning to non-state actors, such as local vigilante groups and anti-cult squads, to stay away from polling stations.
The Command released dedicated telephone numbers for complaints or distress situations. This information was disclosed in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Bright Edafe.
The statement also mentioned that there will be restriction on vehicular movement from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Saturday, July 13, 2024. Only officials on emergency and essential duties, including accredited election monitors and observers, will be allowed to move during this period.
NABTEB examination students are also exempted from this restriction.
The police statement acknowledged the inconvenience caused by these measures but stressed the importance of adherence to ensure a smooth election process.
It also highlighted a ban on VIP escorts during the elections, advising them to avoid moving with their security details. Any officer found violating this order will face arrest and sanctions.
The Commissioner of Police (CP) advised all non-state actors, including vigilantes, anti-cult volunteers, and hunters, to avoid involvement in the election process.
Any interference will be met with strict consequences. The CP reassured residents of a peaceful election, emphasising the role of the electorate in maintaining order.
The command is committed to ensuring the protection of life and property and preserving public tranquility before, during, and after the elections.
