The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, has urged the Delta State Government to take proactive measures on key issues affecting the state, ranging from flooding to insecurity and transparency in governance.

Okpare Theophilus Onojeghen, Member and Onyekachukwu Meluwa, Member, and issued at the end of the Congress, held on Tuesday, 17th September 2024, in Warri, Delta State.
Congress commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for the ongoing construction projects, including the significant flyovers at Enerhen Junction, PTI Junction, and DSC Roundabout.
According to NUJ who Stated that, “These projects will beautify our cities and ease traffic congestion,” the Congress noted, urging for rehabilitation of surrounding link roads.”
On flooding, the Congress echoed warnings from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET) regarding severe flood risks. They called for urgent evacuations of residents in flood-prone areas and emphasized the need for proper utilization of the N39.62 billion ecological fund to mitigate disaster risks. Saying that, “The government must be proactive in protecting lives and properties.”
Addressing insecurity, the Congress lamented the rise in kidnapping and armed robbery, urging the government and security agencies to act swiftly. “We demand action against criminal herdsmen who are endangering food security,” they added, advocating for agricultural hubs in the three senatorial districts to combat hunger.
Members expressed concern over the lack of transparency in the state’s internally generated revenue, calling for monthly disclosures to foster accountability.
“We urge the current administration to adopt a transparent approach as seen in the previous administration,” the communiqué stated.
In education, the Congress highlighted a critical shortage of teachers in public secondary schools, urging the government to address the issue promptly. “Parents and communities are raising alarms about the lack of qualified educators in core subjects,” they noted.
The Congress addressed the challenges posed by rising transport costs due to fuel price hikes, recommending a subsidized transport system to alleviate the economic burden on residents.
The Congress concluded that implementing these suggestions would greatly enhance governance and quality of life for Deltans.
