Delta Monarch Warns Hunger Protest May Trigger National Chaos

The Ovie of Idjerhe Kingdom, King Obukowho Monday Whiskey, Ph.D., of Delta State, has urged Nigerian youths to reconsider the planned nationwide hunger protest, warning that it could lead to further national disorder.

Expressing deep concern over the current state of hunger and growing insecurity in the country, the traditional ruler noted that resorting to protests at this critical time could exacerbate economic instability and insecurity.

King Whiskey, a veteran journalist and media manager with over three decades of experience, noted that while the right to protest is enshrined in the Nigerian constitution, the potential consequences of such actions need to be carefully considered.

Recalling the unrest of the #ENDSARS protests, the king stressed that Nigeria cannot afford another round of national upheaval.

He therefore urged the government to take immediate steps to tackle the critical issue of hunger and avoid actions that could further divide the country.

“I earnestly appeal to you all to stop the planned protest in the interest of our nation,” King Whiskey stated.

He also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address the youths’ concerns, particularly the issues of hunger and the disconnect between ordinary Nigerians and the ruling class.

“Peace and dialogue remain the win-win choice over mass protests that can easily be hijacked by the depraved. Let peace and unity reign supreme in our dear land,” he added.

The monarch, who has long been an advocate for job creation, the establishment of companies, and the revitalization of the agricultural sector, acknowledged that the demands of Nigerian youths are valid and reflect the current economic realities.

He appealed specifically to youths in the Niger Delta to engage in dialogue with the Federal Government under President Tinubu’s leadership in the interest of national unity and progress.

King Whiskey urged the government to implement robust measures that address hunger and unemployment, stressing that the current economic challenges facing the nation require immediate and sustained intervention.

He pointed out that the growing discontent among the youth is a direct result of economic hardships and the perception of neglect by the government.

Highlighting the potential dangers of mass protests, the monarch warned that such actions could be hijacked by unscrupulous elements seeking to destabilise the country.

He reminded the public of the violent turn the #ENDSARS protests took, leading to significant loss of lives and property.

In his closing remarks, King Whiskey reiterated his call for peace and dialogue, emphasising the need for the government to prioritize the welfare of its citizens. He urged Nigerian leaders to bridge the gap between the ruling class and the masses to foster a more inclusive and responsive governance system.
