Delta Govt Approves New Minimum Wage for Workers

By Chuks Peter, DELTA

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved the payment of the new minimum wage for workers in the state, with implementation set to begin in October.

This was disclosed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, during a meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC). The meeting was called to discuss the implementation of the minimum wage adjustment in Delta State.

According to Emu, Governor Oborevwori had directed that the new wage be paid immediately, despite pending assessments of the financial impact on the state’s cash flow.

“The minimum wage committee earlier agreed that payment could not be made until the National Income Salaries and Wages Commission sent the chart.

“We have now received the chart and have gone through the consequential adjustments. While we have not fully determined the future cash flow requirements, the Governor directed us to go ahead with payment because he feels the pains of the people as a labour-friendly Governor.”

In response, NLC Chairman, Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku, praised the Governor for his swift action and commitment to the welfare of workers.

“The Labour movement in Delta State appreciates Governor Oborevwori for graciously approving the implementation of the 2024 minimum wage without stressing us.

“He has made the job of labour much easier. Some thought his earlier promise to pay was just a political statement, but today he has proven his commitment. We thank him for going ahead with the payment while we resolve any discrepancies later.”

Governor Oborevwori’s decision has been welcomed by workers and labour leaders alike, reinforcing his administration’s reputation for prioritizing the welfare of the people.
