Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High Court in Maiduguri has sentenced Aisha Alkali Wakil, popularly known as “Mama Boko Haram,” along with two others, to five years imprisonment each for their involvement in a N6 million fraud. The judgment was delivered on Thursday, November 28, 2024.
This was disclosed by the EFCC in a statement on Wednesday.
Wakil, the CEO of Complete Care and Aid Foundation, a non-governmental organization, was convicted alongside Tahiru Saidu Daura, the NGO’s Programme Manager, and Prince Lawal Shoyode, its Country Director. The trio faced a four-count charge of conspiracy, cheating, and providing false information.
One of the charges stated that between October and November 2018, the defendants dishonestly induced a petitioner, Alhaji Bukar Kachalla of Abks Ventures Limited, to hand over a Toyota Camry 2012 model worth N6 million under the pretext of executing a contract. However, the car was neither purchased nor returned.
The defendants, who were re-arraigned in September 2020, pleaded not guilty to the charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). During the trial, the prosecution presented three witnesses and several exhibits to support its case.
Justice Kumaliya found the defendants guilty and sentenced them to five years imprisonment each without an option of fine. She also ordered them to jointly and severally pay back N3.5 million to the petitioner. Failure to do so would result in an additional five-year jail term.
