Correctional Service Debunks False Report on Kirikiri Inmate, Ayomide Adeleye

****Says Report Was Mischievous -NCoS PRO

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has refuted claims circulating in the media that a remanded inmate, Ayomide Adeleye, is no longer in prison custody.

The NCoS urged Nigerians to disregard the misleading report and reiterated its dedication to upholding justice and promoting accurate information through proper communication channels.

In a statement signed by the NCoS Public Relations Officer, DCC Umar Abubakar, the Service clarified that Ayomide Adeleye, with Custody Number S-1995/24, is currently in the custody of the Maximum Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Kirikiri, Lagos. He was remanded by Magistrate Court 13A, Ogba, Lagos, on September 26, 2024, for charges of kidnapping and murder.

The Service emphasized that the inmate remains in custody as ordered by the court and has not been released, contrary to the false reports.

“To set the records straight, the said inmate aged 23 years with Custody Number S-1995/24 was remanded at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos, for kidnapping and murder on September 26, 2024, by Magistrate Court 13A, Ogba, Lagos.

“He was last produced in court on December 16, 2024, where the presiding magistrate ordered that he remain in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service pending advice from the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP).

“The Service wishes to categorically state that the inmate is still in custody as ordered by the court, and the media reports suggesting otherwise are false.”

The NCoS further clarified that a separate inmate with a similar name had been previously released from the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, after completing his court-ordered remand for a theft case.

“There was an inmate with a similar name who was remanded on March 6, 2024, at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos, for theft. He was discharged by the court on April 4, 2024,” the statement explained.

The Correctional Service described the media report as mischievous and aimed at tarnishing its reputation.

“The report was targeted at misleading the general public and discrediting the Nigerian Correctional Service. Media outlets are advised to verify their information before publishing falsehoods,” the statement added.

Acting Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, assured the public that the Service remains committed to ensuring the safe and humane custody of all legally remanded persons.

“The Nigerian Correctional Service is working tirelessly to ensure that inmates are properly reformed, rehabilitated, and resettled back into society,” the statement concluded.
