In a statement released on his official X account, Governor Sanwo-Olu commended Onakoya for his remarkable achievement and highlighted his journey from Lagos, Nigeria to global recognition, describing it as emblematic of the city’s spirit.
“Congratulations to chess master, Tunde Onakoya, on breaking the world chess marathon record in Times Square, New York,” wrote Governor Sanwo-Olu. “Your journey from Lagos, Nigeria to global recognition embodies the spirit of our great city.”
He further praised Onakoya’s resilience and determination, stating, “#Tunde_OD continues to demonstrate that greatness can emerge from even the most humble beginnings. His remarkable story serves as a blueprint for all of us in Lagos—a city where his impact has been felt the most, showing that with determination, dreams can indeed soar to monumental heights.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the significance of Onakoya’s achievement, highlighting the digital billboards showcasing his journey and the watch parties celebrating his success. Despite facing physical and mental challenges during the marathon, Onakoya remained steadfast in his commitment to empowering children, especially those in underprivileged communities.
Onakoya’s remarkable feat surpassed the previous record set by Norwegian players, Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad, who played for 56 hours and 9 minutes in 2018.
In an update provided by his foundation, Chess in Slums Africa, it was stated, “60 Hours for those who dare to dream! 60 Hours for the millions of children who have been told to abandon their dreams! 60 Hours because one person decided that there is no future worth dreaming of that does not include them! It is now #Tunde60HoursofChess #Tunde_OD.”
Onakoya expressed his motivation for the marathon, emphasizing his goal to raise funds and awareness for providing educational opportunities to underprivileged children across Africa. His achievement serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for aspiring chess players and advocates for education across the continent.
