The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed solidarity with Nigerians struggling with economic difficulties and hunger.

In a statement signed by the President of CAN, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the national leadership acknowledged the daily challenges faced by many Nigerians.

They stressed the importance of protecting citizens’ constitutional rights to peaceful protest.

Highlighting the significance of peaceful demonstrations in a democracy, CAN encouraged Nigerians to exercise their rights responsibly.

They referenced previous protests like #ENDSARS and #RevolutionNow, which were marked by violence and poor management, resulting in the loss of lives and property.

With new protests planned for August 1st, CAN urged citizens to explore alternative ways to voice their concerns, aiming to avoid violence and destruction.

They proposed methods such as dialogue, petitions, and town hall meetings as safer options.

Also, CAN called on the government to reduce the cost of governance and curb the extravagant lifestyles of political officeholders.

They emphasised the urgency of implementing the newly approved national minimum wage and addressing issues like kidnappings, banditry, and mass killings.

The statement concluded with a plea for unity and peace, invoking the teachings of Jesus Christ and praying for wisdom for leaders and resilience for citizens.

The association also highlighted the need for collective effort in addressing the economic challenges, urging both the government and the citizens to work together for the betterment of the country.

They stressed that while peaceful protests are a constitutional right, they should not lead to further hardship or instability.

Archbishop Okoh reiterated CAN’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian people during these trying times and urged the government to listen to the cries of the masses.

He reiterated the importance of immediate action to alleviate the suffering of the people and restore hope.

CAN’s call for peaceful and constructive ways to express grievances aims to foster a more collaborative environment where solutions can be found without resorting to violence.

The Christian Association of Nigeria continues to play a pivotal role in advocating for the rights and well-being of Nigerians, urging for a balance between expressing discontent and maintaining peace and order in the nation.
