The University of Lagos (UNILAG) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Wednesday passed a vote of no confidence on the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr Wale Babalakin.

Speaking to members during a protest, Unilag’s ASUU chairman Dr Dele Ashiru said,

“We are gathered here this afternoon, to review the recent development on our institution. We held a congress of our union today the 11th of March, 2020. We took report on the unwarranted, dictatorial, arbitrary, wicked, inhuman, demonic postponement of the 51st convocation ceremony of this great university.

“After taking a historical and analytical perspective to this unwarranted postponement, congress noted the dictatorial, terroristic and damaging, destructive activities of the pro chancellor of this university and we are beginning from today, Dr. Olawale Bolanle Babalakin have been declared persona non grata on this university and we dont want to see him in this council chamber anymore.

“Comrades, it is not enough to take on of this resolution, we must show capacity and result to exhaust them.

“Consequently, any day Bolanle Babalakin is seen on this campus, he must be sent packing.” Ashiru added.

There had been a conflict of interest between Babalakin and the management of the university. The unresolved crisis led to the suspension of the university’s 51st convocation on Monday, March 11 2020.

The Ministry of Education and the Nigerian University Commission (NUC) had advised the postponement following an allegation by the Pro-Chancellor that the management failed to obtain the approval of the institution’s council.
