The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has awarded Nigeria’s Super Eagles three points and three goals following the canceled 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya.
This decision, handed down by the CAF Disciplinary Board on Saturday, boosts Nigeria’s chances of securing an early qualification.
The chairman of the CAF Disciplinary Board, Ousmane Kane, disclosed the ruling, which found the Libya Football Federation in breach of multiple regulations.
According to the official document, “The Libya Football Federation is found to have breached Article 31 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.”
The board further declared the match forfeited by Libya with a 3-0 score in favor of Nigeria. CAF’s decision also includes a $50,000 fine imposed on the Libya Football Federation, to be paid within 60 days.
“This action is a message to all federations on the importance of upholding the principles of fair play,” a CAF spokesperson commented.
With this judgment, Nigeria now sits comfortably at the top of their qualification group, holding 10 points from four matches, four points ahead of Benin.
Meanwhile, Libya, with just one point, remains at the bottom of the table and is out of contention for AFCON 2025 qualification.
Reacting to the development, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) stated, “This ruling not only reinforces CAF’s commitment to fair play but strengthens our resolve to bring home the AFCON title. Our Super Eagles are prepared to make Nigerians proud.”
Nigeria’s Super Eagles now need only a draw against Benin in their next match, scheduled for November 14 in Abidjan, to confirm their place in the 2025 AFCON tournament set to be hosted by Morocco.
“We are grateful for this decision,” remarked a Super Eagles team member, “and we’re more motivated than ever to push forward and make history.”
