Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger Exit ECOWAS

By Ekpenyong Emmanuel

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has confirmed that the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the regional bloc takes effect today, January 29, 2025.

This development comes after the three Sahel countries declared their intention to quit ECOWAS within 12 months, in line with the bloc’s protocol, on January 29, 2024.

According to ECOWAS spokesperson Joel Ahofodji, the withdrawal is in line with the decision of the ECOWAS authority, and in the spirit of regional solidarity and interest of the people.

Ahofodji emphasized that the bloc remains open to the three countries’ return whenever they wish.

To ensure a smooth transition, ECOWAS has urged all relevant authorities to recognize national passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo held by citizens of the three countries, until further notice.

The bloc has also called for the continued treatment of goods and services from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger in accordance with the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS) and investment policy.

Additionally, ECOWAS has urged the continuation of visa-free movement, residence, and establishment for citizens of the three affected countries, in accordance with ECOWAS protocols, until further notice.

The commission has also requested full support and cooperation for ECOWAS officials from the three countries during their assignments.

Ahofodji stated, “

These arrangements will be in place until the full determination of the modalities of our future engagement with the three countries by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

The Commission has set up a structure to facilitate discussions on these modalities with each of the three countries.

This message is necessary to avoid confusion and disruption in the lives and businesses of our people during this transition period.”

The withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from ECOWAS is seen as a significant development in the region, with potential implications for trade, security, and cooperation among West African States.
