Buhari celebrates UI at 74

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday felicitated with Staff and management of the University of Ibadan, (UI) on the occasion of its 74 years anniversary.

Speaking at the event held at the International Conference Centre, of the institution in Ibadan, the President commended the leadership of the institution on their efforts in actualising the vision of the institution.
The President was represented by the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof Abubakar Rasheed.

In his words, “I am aware that the governing council under the able leadership of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun has been working tirelessly to enable the university to actualize the vision of achieving a world class institution for academic excellence geared towards meeting societal needs.

“I commend the effort of the university administration in maintaining the great reputation which this university has established for itself since its establishment over 70 years ago. I congratulate the University of Ibadan on her 74th foundation day and wish her more success in the years ahead. I also share the joy of this year’s graduates.

In the same vein, the Chancellor of the Institution who is also the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, congratulated the University for sustaining excellence achievements in the university in the last seven years.

He however enjoined the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU and other stakeholders to ensure.

“The ASUU strike has done so much in taking us back to yester years and I believe we need to do a lot to avert strike in our universities because the worst hit are our children not the lecturers.

“We need to take a deep breath and assure ourselves we should not again result in strike, total strike or else everything else fails and we believe everything else will not fail, if we sit down as leaders and talk to ourselves about the truth”.

In the same vein, the Pro Chancellor, John Odigie-Oyegun admonished Union’s to seek other alternatives to settle their crisis.

He also assured that the leadership of the institution will adopt all avenues to ensure that the problems of the institution is tackled headlong.

Meanwhile, the Vice chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale in his addressed called on the federal government and all stakeholder to support the institution with funding in order to achieve the institution’s desired obligation.
“I wish to again plead with Mr. President that the University of Ibadan be given a special priority attention in form of special reconstruction and rehabilitation funds as well as increased allocation spread over a period of ten years for the University to favourably compete with other top institutions not only in Africa but all over the world”.

Meanwhile, no fewer than 1,182 candidates received first degrees in the Faculties of Arts, Science, Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Law, Public Health and Dentistry and another 1,429 candidates were awarded first degrees in the Faculties of Agriculture, Renewable Natural Resources, the Social Sciences, Economics and Management Sciences, Education, Veterinary Medicine, Technology and Pharmacy.

Similarly a total of 656 candidates were awarded first degrees from various Faculties under the Distance Learning Mode of Study and 1,929 first degrees was awarded to affiliated institutions.

Also, a total of seven candidates were awarded MPhil; 622 earned academic Master’s Degree, 18 Professional Masters; five Postgraduate Diplomas were awarded and 153 candidates from various disciplines were awarded the Doctor of Philosophy degrees during the 2022 convocation ceremony of the institution which was held between Monday and Thursday.
