A young bride-to-be, Rebecca Oyedotun met an untimely end on what was meant to be the most joyous day of her life, during her bridal shower in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
“It was a sudden and devastating collapse. There were no signs of illness before,” said Evangelist Oyedotun, the father of the deceased bride and a respected figure at the C&S Reformed Church, Isale-High School.
Scheduled to exchange vows with her beloved, Abiodun Oluwadamilare, on August 19, 2023, Rebecca’s life was tragically cut short on the eve of her wedding.
“The preparations were in full swing. We had even slaughtered a cow to celebrate,” lamented the groom’s sister, her grief palpable. “Abiodun was so excited. He’s our only child.”
Rebecca was rushed to LAUTECH Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso, where for a fleeting moment, there was a glimmer of hope. “She appeared stable after being revived,” said Evangelist Oyedotun. “But her condition worsened by dawn of Saturday.”
In a desperate bid for a miracle, the family transferred Rebecca to Bowen University Teaching Hospital for extensive tests. “We were hopeful,” said Evangelist Oyedotun. “But fate had a different plan.”
“The groom collapsed, crying out, ‘let me take her away,'” recounted Evangelist Oyedotun, describing the heart-wrenching scene at the hospital. “We spent the entire Saturday there.”
Despite valiant efforts, Rebecca’s health continued to deteriorate, leaving the family devastated. “She gave up the ghost on Sunday morning,” Evangelist Oyedotun revealed, his voice heavy with grief.
The circumstances surrounding Rebecca’s tragic passing have cast a poignant shadow over what was meant to be a day of celebration, turning it instead into an occasion of mourning and profound loss.
