BREAKING: UniAbuja ASUU begins Indefinite Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) branch at the University of Abuja has commenced an indefinite strike to address pressing concerns within the union.

The decision to initiate the strike was announced on Thursday following the conclusion of a congress held at the institution’s Permanent Site.

UniAbuja ASUU members find themselves in disagreement with the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’allah, and the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, particularly regarding the procedures for appointing a new VC.

A recent advertorial, appearing in a national daily on March 15, 2024, called for candidates to replace Na’Allah. However, ASUU members rejected the advertisement during a conference, labeling it “illegal” and clarifying it did not originate from the governing council.

Chairman of UniAbuja ASUU, Sylvanus Ugoh, cited the Universities Miscellaneous Provision Act 1993, along with subsequent amendments, asserting that only the governing council has the authority to advertise the VC position when vacant. He emphasized that no other entity or individual is legally authorized to initiate the process of appointing a new VC.
