The Oyo State Government has officially withdrawn charges against individuals linked to the tragic stampede at the Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, which resulted in the deaths of at least 35 children.
Among those cleared are ex-Queen Naomi Silekunola, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, the chairman of an Ibadan-based radio station, and Mr. Abdulahi Fasasi, the principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun. The court has ruled in their favour, and they are now free.
A video obtained by our correspondent shows Hamzat celebrating the court ruling alongside well-wishers outside the courthouse.
Speaking to journalists, Oyo State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Biodun Aikomo, explained, “The tragic incident in December resulted in the death of some Nigerians. As per the law, when death occurs under unusual circumstances, legal action is required.
“The state filed charges against those implicated, intending to prosecute. However, the individuals involved showed genuine empathy and compassion, making efforts to comfort the grieving families.
“In light of this, we believe that the primary purpose of prosecution is not to harm but to serve justice. Therefore, we have decided to withdraw the charges, and the court has struck them out. They are now free.”
Governor Seyi Makinde, while addressing calls for leniency, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to upholding the rule of law.
“He noted that some had questioned why justice was being pursued in Oyo State, given that similar incidents in Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory did not lead to prosecutions.
