The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over multiple allegations of fraud.
The impeachment was confirmed during a plenary session held on Monday, though details surrounding the decision remain unclear at the time of this report.
Following the impeachment, the Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, was sworn in as the new Speaker of the House, making her the first female Speaker in Lagos State history.
Meranda, who represents the Apapa 1 Constituency, took her oath of office shortly after the removal of Obasa.
Speaking during the ceremony, she said, “I affirm that I will be faithful as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly; that I will perform my functions honestly to the best of my ability, faithfully, and in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Efforts to reach Obasa’s Chief Press Secretary, Eromosele Ebhomele, for comments on the development have so far been unsuccessful.
