BREAKING: FG to stop use of ‘take-away’ disposables

The Federal Government of Nigeria has released its directive on the ban of some plastic materials in the country, the government says it encourages Nigerians to be prepared for a “holistic circular management of our waste”.

The statement according to The Minister of State for Environment, Iziaq Salako, who made this known in a press release, said the decision of the Lagos State Government to place a ban on Styrofoam and other single use plastics popularly known as “takeaway packs” is a strong message to businesses and the general public that the threat of single use plastics needs to be adequately addressed, if the country is to deliver on her environmental agenda of sustainability.

The Lagos State Government, commended for taking the bull by the horn also said the Federal Ministry of Environment has recently inaugurated “an inter-agency committee to continue the process of vigorous consultation across government, across businesses and with all stakeholders to create a sustainable solution that is workable for Nigeria”.

The Minister said the ministry is currently examining policies and initiatives that will drive the production of alternatives to regular plastics

“The current poorly regulated and indiscriminate use of plastics has to be addressed, and Nigerians must prepare for the inevitable change in this area, including banning some products that the masses are already used to.

“In the meantime, Nigerians are advised to turn a new leaf when it comes to environmental issues, to reduce and reuse plastics and also explore the growing market of recycling for their plastic waste.

“In the next few days, massive awareness, campaigns and sensitization will be set in motion to prepare Nigerians for the inevitable ban of some plastics and the holistic circular management of our waste.”
