Benue Gov Suspends Attorney General Over EFCC Lawsuit

Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has suspended the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Fidelis Mynin, following his involvement in a lawsuit against the legality of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) without the governor’s approval.

This suspension comes after the Supreme Court reserved judgment on a case filed by 19 states challenging the constitutionality of the laws that established the EFCC.

Notably, three states; Anambra, Adamawa, and Ebonyi, have since withdrawn from the suit.

The Attorney General of Anambra, Professor Sylvia Ifemeje, indicated her state’s withdrawal in court, filing a motion on October 20.

Similarly, Ebonyi’s Attorney General, Ikenna Nwidagu, confirmed their withdrawal in a notice submitted on October 21.

Governor Alia expressed surprise that the state participated in the lawsuit against the EFCC, leading him to take action against Mynin.

Kula Tersoo, the governor’s spokesperson, confirmed the suspension, stating, “It’s true; His Excellency has suspended the State Attorney General for joining the suit without informing him.”
