Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, on Wednesday, paid an unscheduled visit to the state secretariat in Makurdi and was met with a low turnout of civil servants.
The governor arrived at the premises at 10:35 a.m. and, upon noticing the absence of many workers, ordered the gates to be locked, barring latecomers from entering.
Governor Alia expressed disappointment at the lack of commitment among civil servants, describing it as unacceptable.
“This kind of attitude does not reflect the seriousness required to build a better Benue State,” he said.
Missing Officials and Lax Attitude
While inspecting the premises, the governor noted the absence of key officials, including commissioners and other high-ranking personnel.
He criticized the poor work ethic, stressing that government officials are expected to set an example for others.
“I am disappointed to see this level of indiscipline among civil servants. You are here to serve the people, and lateness or absenteeism is a disservice to the entire state,” the governor stated.
Collective Responsibility
Addressing the locked-out workers, Governor Alia reminded them of their responsibility as representatives of the government.
He warned that the administration would not tolerate negligence or a lackadaisical attitude toward work.
“Your actions affect not just your job but also the well-being of your families and the people you serve. Discipline is non-negotiable. If you cannot adhere to the rules, you will face the consequences,” he warned.
Call for Commitment
The governor urged all civil servants to embrace punctuality and dedication, emphasizing that their role is vital to the state’s progress.
“This government is determined to create a productive and accountable system. But that starts with you, the workers. Let us set a standard that reflects our collective desire for a better Benue,” Alia said.
Governor Alia also hinted that similar unscheduled visits would continue, underscoring his commitment to enforcing discipline across all sectors of the state.
