Benin Traditional Council Tackles Nigerians Abusing Customs

By Ekpenyong Emmanuel

The Benin Palace has taken a strong stance against individuals misusing royal symbols and traditions, placing curses on those who continue to disregard the revered customs of the Benin Kingdom.

This move aims to protect the integrity and dignity of the Benin monarchy.

According to Chief Norense Ozigbo-Esere, the Osuma of Benin, “it has come to the attention of the Benin Traditional Council that some individuals have formed the habit of indulging in the abuse, aberration, and abomination of the well-cherished Benin customs and tradition.”

The palace specifically condemned the unauthorized use of ceremonial swords, Benin Royal costumes, Ikele’ beads, and the ‘Okuku hairstyle’, which are reserved for specific members of the Benin Royal family.

They also warned against the misuse of palace insignia and disrespect towards the Benin monarchy.

Chief Ozigbo-Esere emphasized that the consequences of breaching these customs and traditions would be severe, affecting not only those involved but also their generations yet unborn.

The palace has directed chiefs, priests, and priestesses to place a curse on those who continue to engage in these acts.

The Benin Palace’s stance is a clear indication of their commitment to preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom.

As the Edo State Government has previously warned, the palace and the revered monarch, Oba Ewuare II, should not be dragged into politics.
