The Assistant Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State, Amadein Tibiebi, has been arrested by officers from Zone 16 of the Nigerian Police for alleged illegal possession of firearms.
Tibiebi, an ex-militant, is currently being held at the Criminal Investigation Department of the Bayelsa State Police Command, as Zone 16 lacks its own detention facilities.
Tibiebi’s arrest on Monday follows a related incident from November 2021, when one Richard Okon was apprehended for illegal possession of firearms at a wake-keep in Koluama, a community in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
In a video confession, Okon claimed that the gun found in his possession belonged to Tibiebi, with whom he had been working. Despite this confession, no immediate action was taken against Tibiebi at the time.
A source at Zone 16 revealed that Tibiebi has been making efforts to avoid detention by contacting several high-profile individuals, including senators and top law enforcement officials.
“Tibiebi is being investigated for alleged illegal possession of firearms. It is a serious offense, but he has been calling very powerful people to go scot-free,” the source stated.
Tibiebi is notably connected within the political landscape, being the nephew and chief security officer to former PDP state chairman Cleopas Moses, who also served as the Senator representing Bayelsa Central Senatorial District in the Ninth Senate.
According to a community source, Tibiebi has often boasted about being untouchable due to his influential connections within the PDP and the state government.
When contacted for comments, Zone 16 Public Relations Officer, Emonena Gunn, confirmed Tibiebi’s arrest but provided no further details, stating only that the matter remains under investigation.
