DELTA: The Asagba of Asaba, HRH Prof. Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge, has issued a directive banning traditional practices by non-natives within Asaba, citing the need to preserve cultural heritage and regulate spiritual activities in the land.

The decision has sparked discussions among residents and traditional stakeholders, with many seeing it as a step towards preserving the cultural identity of Asaba.

A statement from the palace confirmed that the decision was taken following an executive council meeting held on February 11, 2025. Effective immediately, all activities of Ndi Eze Nwanyi who are not natives of Asaba have been prohibited.

In addition, male traditional medicine practitioners who are not registered with the appropriate regulatory bodies will no longer be allowed to operate within Asaba.

The directive also placed restrictions on access to the revered Onishe shrine, stating that non-natives would no longer be permitted to visit the site without proper registration.

“Non-natives of Asaba are hereby restricted from visiting the Onishe shrine. Any non-native wishing to access the shrine must first be registered by the Otu-Ihaza. Likewise, Ndi Ahaba who wish to worship at Onishe must obtain clearance from Otu-Ihaza,” the statement read.

The palace emphasized that the move was aimed at ensuring proper monitoring of those who visit the shrine and engage in traditional practices, warning that severe consequences await anyone who violates the directive.
