Arrests of Ewu Kingdom Leaders Raise Tensions in Delta, location unknown

By Chucks Peter, DELTA |

Men in military uniforms reportedly arrested the wanted President General of Ewu Kingdom, Prof. Arthur Ekpekpo, at an undisclosed location in Sapele, Delta State, on Sunday night. His whereabout remains unknown.

According to sources within the community, two other leaders associated with the Okuama Vanguard, Chief Belvis Adogbo and Dennis Akugbaye, were also apprehended on Monday morning.

The arrests occurred at various locations in Ughelli and were carried out by armed men in plain clothes.

An Okuama leader, who requested anonymity, suggested that the arrests might be connected to a March incident that resulted in the deaths of 17 military personnel.

However, he expressed confusion over why their leaders were being targeted, suspecting the involvement of operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS).

The anonymous source also noted that the arrests came at a time when peace was gradually returning to the troubled community.

The Delta State Government has been working on resettling displaced residents. Despite the tension and uncertainty, no official statement has been issued by security agencies, and a senior police officer claimed to be unaware of the situation.

The Okuama community was razed in March 2024 by soldiers of the Nigerian Army in a reprisal attack following the killing of 17 military personnel by unknown gunmen near the area.

The attack led to the destruction of the entire community, including hospitals, schools, and private buildings.

As of the time of filing this report, the location of the arrested individuals remains unknown.
