APC Kicks As Edo Postpones School Resumption Over Petrol Hike

The Edo State Government has indefinitely postponed the resumption of all schools across the state due to the recent hike in fuel prices.

This decision was announced in a memo issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Ojo Akin-Longe, in Benin City on Saturday.

According to the memo, the resumption date for public and private schools, originally set for Monday, September 9, 2024, has been postponed until further notice.

“The Edo State Government hereby announces the postponement of the resumption of all public and private schools in Edo State, originally scheduled for Monday, 9th September 2024, until further notice,” stated Akin-Longe.

He further explained that the government’s decision is based on the growing tension arising from the recent fuel price hike and the associated challenges faced by parents and guardians.

“An official statement from the government has directed that schools remain closed due to the tension arising from the recent increase in fuel prices,” he noted.

Akin-Longe also urged parents, guardians, and caregivers to be vigilant and closely monitor the activities of their children and wards amid the current situation.

“The government urges parents, guardians, and caregivers to monitor the activities of their children and wards closely, given the current situation and the rising tension caused by the fuel price hike,” he added.

The postponement has generated mixed reactions from the public, with many expressing concerns over the extended delay in the academic calendar.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State has condemned the state government’s indefinite postponement of the school resumption date, labeling it as “expensive political gimmickry” in response to the recent fuel price hike.

In a memo issued by Ojo Akin-Longe, the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Education, the planned resumption date of September 9 was put on hold until further notice.

Mr. Peter Uwadiae-Enosorogbe, the APC Publicity Secretary, criticized the state government’s move, describing it as an unnecessary political maneuver that was not anticipated by the public.

Uwadiae-Enosorogbe expressed disappointment that the state government would jeopardize the educational future of the children for political reasons, questioning the sincerity and priorities of the current administration.
