Crisis erupted in Lafia, Nasarawa State after residents flooded the street in protest against the Supreme Court’s ruling which upheld the election of All Progressives Congress governor, Abdullahi Sule.

Elderly women, including widows, were spotted during the protest while vehicle tires were set ablaze on major roads while police officers were also at various part of the state.
They expressed dissatisfaction over the apex Court judgement, describing as a ruling not in line with the direction of people’s choice.

Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Sule as the winner of the March 2023 election with 347,209 votes. While his closest rival of the Peoples Democratic Party, David Ombugadu polled second with 283,016 votes.

Ombugadu, however, dragged Sule to the state election tribunal, challenging his victory.

In its, judgement, the tribunal sacked the governor and declared Ombugadu the winner of the election.

But the Appeal Court reinstated Sule and held that the tribunal wrongly relied on the evidence of eight of the PDP witnesses, whose statements on oath were not front-loaded alongside the petition.

However, at the apex Court, the presiding Judge, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun held that the appeal lacked merit.
