Anambra Judiciary Embark on Indefinite Strike

The Anambra State Chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) on Monday initiated an indefinite strike, causing a total shutdown of court activities across the state.

The strike has resulted in a complete cessation of court proceedings, leaving the state’s judiciary system at a standstill.”

The strike is a response to the state government’s failure to implement the Consolidated Judiciary Salary Structure.

A visit to the High Courts at Ekwueme Square, the Chief Magistrate’s Courts, and the Customary Courts in Amawbia, Awka, revealed a complete shutdown of court proceedings.

The court premises were deserted, with only security personnel on duty. Lawyers and litigants who attempted to enter the courts were turned back, as the entrance gates were locked.

According to JUSUN State Chairman, Mr. Henry Ezeoke, the strike is a protest against the state government’s failure to honor agreements reached in 2011 and 2015.

The union is demanding the implementation of the Consolidated Judiciary Salary Structure, which has been pending for years.

“The action was a result of the state government’s refusal to pay CONJUS as agreed upon in 2011 and 2015, respectively.

“We have explored all possible avenues, but the state government has refused to comply with the agreement on the implementation of CONJUS.

“The union earlier issued a 21-day ultimatum to the state government, but it was ignored. We believe that downing tools is the only language the government will understand.

“Therefore, the strike will last indefinitely until the government meets the conditions and pending further directives from the union,” Ezeoke said.
