Members of the Ezinano Community in Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State, have announced a ₦10 million reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for recent killings in the nearby Nibo community.
The tragic incident, which occurred during the Nibo community’s ‘Onwa Asaa festival’ two weeks ago, resulted in the deaths of at least 13 individuals when unidentified gunmen opened fire on festival-goers. The state police have described the violence as stemming from “cult-related clashes.”
The announcement of the reward was made during the Second Edition of “Ezinano Day,” an event celebrating the community’s culture. Community leader Jeff Nweke condemned the attack and vowed to combat cultism in Ezinano and neighboring areas. He called on anyone with pertinent information to step forward, stating, “The Ezinano Community will not tolerate violence or cultism. We will not rest until justice is served.”
Nweke also revealed plans for a ₦100 million empowerment fund aimed at supporting rural women, with an initial release of ₦50 million. He emphasized that empowering women is crucial for community development, asserting, “When you empower women, you empower the community.”
Additionally, Nweke announced he would be stepping down from leadership by December. The event was well-attended, featuring traditional masquerade dances, cultural performances, and festivities.
