Amphitheater Saga: Adeleke visits OAU, pays injured students’ medical bills

The Executive Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has committed to covering the medical expenses of students from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, who are currently receiving treatment at the University Health and Medical Centre and the University Teaching Hospital Complex.

Governor Adeleke, speaking through his Commissioner for Education, Honourable Dipo Eluwole, expressed his sympathy to the university management and the parents of the affected students regarding the unfortunate incident.

This was conveyed in a statement released by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju.

During his visit, Honourable Eluwole was guided through the scene of the incident at the Amphitheatre by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Simeon Bamire, and other principal officers of the university.

He also visited the two health facilities where the students are being treated.

Eluwole was however pleased to observe that the affected students were responding well to treatment.

Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Osun State Ministry of Education, he praised the university management for their swift response to the emergency and the prompt medical attention provided to the students.

During his interaction with the four students being treated at the University Health and Medical Centre, the Commissioner commended their bravery and wished them speedy recovery. At the Neurological Ward of the University Teaching Hospital, where two other students are receiving care, Honourable Eluwole urged the parents to view the incident as a natural occurrence, highlighting that events like torrential rain, harsh harmattan, and scorching sun are acts of God beyond human control.

He further informed the Vice Chancellor that Governor Adeleke had pledged to cover all medical expenses related to the students’ treatment.

Responding, Professor Bamire expressed gratitude to Governor Adeleke for his generosity and compassion.

He praised the governor’s fatherly concern for the students and the people of Osun State.

Bamire also prayed for divine wisdom, knowledge, and good health for Governor Adeleke to continue leading Osun State to greater heights.

The incident, which occurred early Thursday morning, involved a part of the ceiling in the Amphitheatre of Oduduwa Hall falling and injuring several students during a lecture. This was caused by a torrential rainfall accompanied by a whirlwind.
