By Daniel Ayantoye | Ibadan

Following the lingering religious crisis in Sokoto State, the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) has enjoined residents in the Oyo State to maintain religious tolerance.

A student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, Deborah Samuel was killed by some muslim youth over alleged blasphemous comments.

The youths in a video that has since gone viral on social media claimed they killed Deborah to protect their religion.

The incident which has also led to several other attacks in State began on thursday when the youth stoned and burnt Deborah to death over her comment on whatsapp which was alleged to be blasphemous.

Meanwhile, the Council in a statement signed by the President General, Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga, enjoined Residents in Oyo State to desist from any form of Religious crisis in the State.

The statement reads, “The recent disturbing events of religious challenges and their raging consequences in some parts of Nigeria have necessitated the Central council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCU’s) appeal to all indigenes and residents in lbadanland to maintain the harmonious co-habiting and relationships for which Ibadan has long been renowned.

“It should be noted that the heights of religious harmony has always been demonstrated in Ibadanland , one incidence of which was the event of February 2022, when the three main religions, namely Traditional (Isese) Worshippers, Muslims, and Christians, held a joint service and prayer session for Ibadanland at lbadan House, Oke Aremo, ibadan without blemish. (A rear occurrence in some other places).

“We joyfully note that in an average family compound in Ibadanland all the three religions has their faithfuls as members, thus, practicing and facilitating religious harmony in Ibadan has always been smooth and seamless.

“This enviable prevalence of mutual coexistence cannot be taken for granted, hence, an appeal to all (natives and non natives) in Ibadanland not to allow the intiltrations of religious disharmony any other part of Nigeria or beyond to affect this Godly position we have taken and enjoyed for long and till date.

“This appeal is with the authority of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Senator Dr. Mohood Olalekan Balogun, Alli-Okunmade ll, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, being broadcast by the Central Council of lbadan Indigenes (CCII).

“Once again, piease av ner influence anyone in this megalopolis against the spirit of good coexistence and mutual tolerance herein prevalent

“Please accept my heartfelt appreciation”. He added.
