In a surprise move, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has dissolved his cabinet, effective immediately.
The dissolution was announced at a valedictory dinner held for the outgoing cabinet members at the Government House in Uyo on Friday night.
Governor Eno, who expressed gratitude to the outgoing cabinet members for their service to the state, warned against lobbying for new appointments.
He stated that the selection of new cabinet members would be his sole prerogative, and that any attempt to influence his decision would be counterproductive.
According to the governor, “To appoint people into the EXCO of government is the sole prerogative of the governor. There’s first 11 and he (governor) takes responsibility for bringing them on board. And their loyalty will be to him and to him alone.
If you want anybody not to make it to the EXCO, the surest way is to send the name of the person.”
Governor Eno also announced that he would submit a new list of cabinet nominees to the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly for clearance next week.
He assured that the new cabinet would be constituted to drive the implementation of his administration’s development agenda.
The outgoing cabinet members, who were sworn in 20 months ago, were praised by the governor for their dedication and hard work.
He described them as “friends and colleagues” who had contributed significantly to the success of his administration.
The dissolution of the cabinet has been seen as a strategic move by Governor Eno to reposition his administration for the challenges ahead. With the submission of a new list of cabinet nominees expected next week, all eyes are on the governor to see who will make the cut for the new cabinet.
