The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has emphasised that in Nigeria, even those selling puff-puff at airports consider themselves aviation experts.
Keyamo made this known during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he addressed the actions of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authorities regarding Dana Airline’s health status.
The suspension of Dana Airlines’ Air Operator Certificate by the NCAA, following safety concerns, was highlighted. This move came shortly after an incident involving a Dana Air aircraft (MD82 with registration marks 5SN-BKI) experienced a runway incursion at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
Responding to criticisms of the suspension, Keyamo clarified that he instructed the NCAA to take action, emphasising the importance of proper aircraft checks to avoid what he termed as “flying coffins.”
He however expressed frustration with self-proclaimed aviation experts and welcomed debates on improving the aviation sector.
Keyamo’s challenge for public debates on aviation matters is not new, as evidenced by his visit to Airbus’ factory in France. Despite criticism, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to facilitating aircraft leasing for local operators.
Speaking on the irregularities within the sector, he highlighted deep-rooted corruption, promising a thorough cleansing process to eliminate regulatory misconduct and ensure public safety.
Meanwhile, he criticized regulators for unethical practices, emphasising the need to dismantle corrupt systems within the aviation sector.
