Air Force Personnel Assault IKEDC Workers Over Electricity Disconnection

Personnel of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) have reportedly stormed the office of the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) in Lagos, allegedly assaulting workers and vandalizing company property over the disconnection of electricity supply at the Sam Ethnan Air Force Base in Ikeja.

The incident, which took place on Thursday morning, was confirmed by Kingsley Okotie, the spokesperson for IKEDC. Okotie explained that the NAF personnel were reacting to the disconnection of the base’s power supply, which followed an outstanding debt of over N4 billion owed by the Air Force.

“They invaded our offices at our CHQ (headquarters), assaulted and molested our staff, and caused extensive damage to our property,” Okotie said. “They stole about 16 of our vehicles, which were driven away by their own drivers. Our offices were destroyed, laptops, phones, and IT infrastructure were stolen, and all our CCTV cameras were destroyed.”

Okotie also shared that he sustained a fractured leg during the attack. He added that the chief executive officer of IKEDC, Folake Soetan, narrowly avoided being apprehended, as the personnel were actively searching for her.

Photos and videos obtained by TheCable show the extent of the damage, with printers, CCTV cameras, and other office equipment visibly destroyed.

The situation has raised concerns about the safety of IKEDC staff and the consequences of the alleged violent response to the disconnection of electricity.
