Ahead of the planned nationwide protest, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has called on youths and residents to maintain peace to enable the State to achieve its economic development goals as outlined in the ARISE Agenda.

Addressing key stakeholders, including youth groups, students, market associations, the NLC and TUC, civil society organisations, and others in Uyo, the Governor acknowledged the constitutional right of citizens to assemble and peacefully protest government actions.

However, he emphasised that the State would benefit more from maintaining peace and tranquility.

Governor Eno highlighted that his administration has made significant efforts to improve the welfare of Akwa Ibom residents through various initiatives, especially in government-labour relations, humanitarian efforts, youth empowerment schemes, palliatives, agriculture, education, healthcare, and other capital projects.

He noted that the State’s status as one of the most peaceful has attracted tourists and investors.

“We are a peaceful State, and we have worked hard to maintain this peace. If you choose to participate in the planned protest, please do so peacefully. Ensure that miscreants and hoodlums do not hijack your protest,” the Governor said.

He questioned the necessity of the protest in Akwa Ibom, given the government’s efforts to prioritise the welfare of the people, public service workers, the poor, and the vulnerable.

He cited various initiatives, including the ARISE Compassionate Homes, payment of gratuities totaling over N22 billion, and a N50,000 stipend to the elderly under the ARISE Elderly Care Initiative.

The Governor also mentioned the free voucher programme through the Bulk Purchase Agency, which has benefitted 314,422 families, and social transfers to the aged, physically challenged, chronically ill, and widows, impacting over 200,000 beneficiaries.

Additionally, the State has provided a wage award for three months to cushion the effects of the fuel subsidy removal, paid the 13th-month salary tagged ‘Enomber’ last December, and recently paid a N1.1 billion bonus to public service workers.

Governor Eno highlighted the commissioning of the 236 Grace Estate, a low to middle-income housing scheme for civil servants, with 150 units to be given free through a raffle draw after a N50,000 Expression of Interest fee.

He also announced the release of the 2023 promotion, increased pensions for those who retired before 2012, and the approval of the outstanding 7.7 percent Contributory Pension to contributors.

The Governor’s appeal was echoed by youth groups, students, market associations, and organised labour, who praised his commitment to the people’s welfare and the State’s development.

They assured that they were not involved in organizing the planned protest and would not participate.

Dr. Ntenyin Solomon Etuk, the Oku Ibom Ibibio and President-General of the Akwa Ibom Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers, commended the Governor’s development efforts and deemed the protest unnecessary in Akwa Ibom.

He urged continued support for the government to achieve more democratic dividends.

State Commissioner of Police, CP Waheed Ayilara, assured that the police and sister agencies were ready to provide necessary protection for all, including protesters, while outlining the conditions for lawful demonstrations.

He encouraged everyone to go about their legitimate business peacefully and lawfully.
