After 49 Years, Awomolo, SAN Repays N2m Student Loan to NELFUND

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced the receipt of N2,000,000 from Asiwaju Adegboyega Solomon Awomolo, a prominent Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

This repayment comes nearly five decades after he initially benefited from the now-defunct Federal Government Student Loan Scheme.

In a statement signed by Monalisa Dike, on behalf of the Director of Corporate Communications, NELFUND revealed that Awomolo had received a loan of N1,000 during his undergraduate studies at the then University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in the 1975/1976 and 1976/1977 academic sessions.

The fund highlighted Awomolo’s recent repayment of N2,000,000 as a testament to his dedication to repaying the loan in full. Despite several previous attempts over the years, Awomolo was unable to complete the repayment until now.

In a letter dated September 4, 2024, addressed to NELFUND’s Managing Director/CEO, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, Awomolo expressed profound gratitude to the Nigerian government for the initial support that enabled him to complete his law degree without financial strain. He also praised NELFUND for its transparency and commitment to providing financial aid to deserving students across Nigeria.

Awomolo’s gesture underscores his appreciation for the opportunity provided by the student loan and highlights the importance of supporting educational initiatives in the country.
