Afenifere Leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo Dies at 96

Nigeria has lost one of its foremost nationalists and elder statesmen, Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo, who passed away peacefully at his Lekki residence in Lagos on Friday, February 14, 2025. He was 96.

Chief Adebanjo, a respected legal luminary and former Organising Secretary of the defunct Action Group, was until his death the national leader of Afenifere, the Yoruba socio-cultural organization. His demise marks the end of an era for many who saw him as a relentless advocate for justice, equity, and true federalism in Nigeria.

In a statement signed on behalf of the family by Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh (née Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs. Adeola Azeez (née Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo, the family described him as a principled leader whose passion for a progressive Nigeria never wavered.

“We will forever cherish his commitment to truth, justice, and a better Nigeria. He dedicated his life to the struggle for a country where fairness and good governance prevail,” the statement read.

Born in Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Chief Adebanjo’s influence extended beyond politics. His legal career, activism, and leadership in Afenifere positioned him as a towering figure in the nation’s socio-political landscape. He is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

The family announced that consultations are ongoing with associates and key stakeholders to finalize arrangements for his funeral, with details to be shared in due course.

As a mark of respect, condolence registers have been opened at his residence in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, and his country home in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State, allowing friends, associates, and well-wishers to pay their last respects.
