By Paulinus Nta, A’Ibom

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declared its intention to challenge the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming local government elections in Akwa Ibom.

The PDP has held a firm grip on the state’s politics for over 20 years. To this end, the ADC inaugurated a 31-member executive committee last Friday, signaling their readiness to compete vigorously in the elections.

The inauguration, held at the state secretariat on 48 Udotung Ubo Street, Uyo, was conducted by the party’s national chairman, High Chief Raph Nwosu.

The newly appointed officers include Dr. Godwin Umontuen as the state leader, Hon. Duke Dick as the state chairman, and Ibanga Idongesit as the state secretary.

Also, key positions were filled, with Stanley Akpan as Senatorial Vice Chairman (Eket), Imo Frank Essiet (Ikot Ekpene), Mfon Archibong (Uyo), and others.

In his inaugural speech, state chairman, Hon. Duke Dick, expressed gratitude to the national chairman for his presence and for elevating the party to a national level.

He also thanked Dr. Umontuen, describing him as the ADC’s pillar in Akwa Ibom, and urged party members to stay committed to the party’s goal of taking over the government house in 2027.

Speaking on behalf of the women, state women’s leader Julie Esa, praised the national chairman for personally inaugurating the officers.

She noted that the move had energised the party to challenge the ruling PDP and reiterated the women’s commitment to mobilising support for the ADC.

High Chief Raph Nwosu, the national chairman, urged members to remain steadfast and commended the state chairman for his efforts in strengthening the party’s presence in Akwa Ibom.

He also highlighted the importance of increasing women’s membership and active involvement in the party.

The event concluded with the decoration of Dr. Godwin Umontuen as a member of the Board of Trustees for the African Democratic Congress.

The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including the National Vice Chairman of the ADC (South-South) and state chairmen of other political parties, such as Hon. Utip Etiebet of the African Action Congress (AAC) and Hon. Coach Chris of the National Rescue Movement, among others.
