A member of the House of Representatives, Alex Ikwechegh, has publicly apologized after a video showed him assaulting a Bolt driver who came to deliver a package at his residence.
In his statement on Monday, Ikwechegh admitted that his actions did not meet the standards expected of a public official.
“As a public servant, I recognize the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people. My behaviour fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry,” he said.
Ikwechegh expressed regret for the embarrassment caused to the driver, his constituents, and the public.
The lawmaker pledged full cooperation with the Nigerian Police, supporting their investigation and commitment to justice.
“I assure the public of my cooperation with the Nigerian Police investigation into this matter,” he stated, adding that he appreciated the swift response of both the police and his party in condemning his actions.
To prevent a recurrence of such behaviour, Ikwechegh revealed he would be undergoing professional counseling and participating in community service initiatives focused on promoting respect and empathy.
He further called on Nigerians to foster a culture of respect and understanding.
“We must work together to build a society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. Thank you for your understanding as I embark on this journey towards healing and growth,” he added.
The incident, captured on video by the distressed driver, Abuwatseya, showed Ikwechegh angrily slapping and threatening the driver at his residence in Maitama, Abuja.
Public outcry over the video prompted the police to invite the lawmaker for questioning at its Maitama Divisional Headquarters.
Ikwechegh’s apology and ongoing police cooperation mark a step towards accountability amid public demands for justice.
